Our research reveals that having a medical cannabis card isn't the best indicator of consumption motivation. Many consumers in adult-use markets use cannabis for therapeutic reasons without a medical card, while some in medical-only markets get medical cards but also use cannabis recreationally. Their 2023 Consumer Survey shows 53% of consumers use cannabis for both medical and recreational purposes, while 32% are purely recreational users, and 15% are strictly medical. The study also found that medical users are more likely to consistently buy from the same source, underscoring the need for reliable products for medical consumers.
